I cry every time I watch this scene from Up.
It’s a masterpiece of screenwriting and film making. Maybe not out of context like it is here but it’s a crucial turning point in Carl’s journey.
Here’s Carl, an old fashioned guy who thinks he’s failed his childhood sweetheart and wife, Ellie. He worries he never gave her the life he thought she wanted or the one he wanted to give her and dwells on whether he held her back from living her dreams. When he does try after she’s passed away, by flying their house to South America, he again comes close to failing, disappoints his mate Russell and is really no closer to being at peace with Ellie’s passing than he was before.
In this scene Carl opens Ellie’s adventure book from when they were children and by chance discovers the pages of the book he always thought were empty. It’s this moment that Carl realises life is an adventure, especially his and Ellie’s life. That the simple things they had shared were just as exciting and fulfilling as any exploration to the jungle. He can finally move on.
For me it’s a mind blowing scene.
